Food, Politics, and the March Against Monsanto

The seeds of a multi-billion dollar corporate coupe de tat have been sown in the fields of our political landscape. Our government, bought by an industry that continues to feed poison to the masses, while our leaders feed lies to the People. The poisoning of our environment, our food, and now our politics is at the hands of Monsanto, the Agricultural Biotech giant who is responsible for one of the world’s largest supplies of genetically modified organisms and genetically engineered seed products. Providing some of the largest food companies in the world with these genetically engineered products, including household names such as Coca-Cola, General Mills, Nabisco, and others. Monsanto has long been a source of criticism and controversy due to the unsavory tactics it adopts while fighting family owned farms and grass roots food producers over ownership rights of their engineered seeds. In addition to their bullying of small time suppliers, and producing GMO’s they are also known for their infamous products like DDT and Agent Orange, both of which have had devastating effects on humans and the environment with no initial oversight.

In March of this year, bill  H.R. 933  also known as the Monsanto Protection Act written by Monsanto Sponsored Senator Roy Blunt, was signed into law by President Obama, and as the ink stained the page, so too would our long legacy of upholding the Law and Justice also be stained, once again by the hands of the  corrupted. So now with the signing of this bill, Monsanto finds themselves in another firestorm of controversy surrounding the new law which protects them and their farmers from litigation, if adverse health effects stem from their engineered products. Given the track record of poisons made by Monsanto and the devastation it has previously caused the world, it is extremely irresponsible for our government to now allow this company to continue producing new products without government oversight and the fear of legal repercussions.   H.R.933 is just another example in a long list of corporate driven bills that have passed the desks of our leaders in an attempt to give unnecessary protections to multi-billion dollar corporations, against the will of the People.

“We the People” continue to lose out to the Way of the Profit.  Perpetual Progress continues to hold the reigns of a world which consists of limited resources and unlimited desires, with profit-hungry companies like Monsanto continuing to push science towards a world of abundance.  Although the abundance they seek, is in direct contrast to the interests and the will of the People. To answer the call, the People’s growing voice of dissent has caught the ears of at least one politician who attempted this week on Thursday to repeal the measure in H.R. 933 that grants Monsanto and others this unwarranted protection.  Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon offered an amendment to the bill which was immediately halted by Monsanto employee-Senator Blunt and others.  In addition to the failing amendment the U.S. Senate has just shot down a bill to label GMO foods, a measure that has been adopted by Europe, Brazil, Australia and many others. Our government continues to show its favor for the will of the corporation over the will of the people, further illustrating a greater problem that is growing throughout the world. It is the problem of corporate-controlled dictatorship-style governance which has become a poison to the global political landscape.

So in response to this growing problem over 200,000 in 40 countries will gather this weekend to protest against the food giant and stand up against corporate despotism.  We must all join the effort against these titans and show our support for a change in how our food is produced.  We must also begin to represent ourselves instead of allowing politicians to represent corporate interests.  So Stand and Be Heard!  March Against Monsanto at your local city hall today May 25th, 2013 at 2pm EST.  Join the Movement!

The Search for Self and the Art of Becoming

The human condition is a volatile and unforgiving endeavor and for most of us we find ourselves swept into the undulating waves of change.  It is Change which is the only constant for many of us, as we watch the scene, plot and characters of our story evolve in front of our eyes.  We ride upon the violent waters of our life in hopes of climbing the rising tide, but the storm riddled waters remind us of our  mortality and for many this reality can be paralyzing.  The passing scenes and fruitless dreams become the story that we manufacture; it is our attempt to breathe meaning into the dusty corners of our hallways, these meaningless stretches of our existence, soon brought to life with the aid of human imagination.  Our stories become larger with each telling and we become the story that we have woven with our words.  Our memories are no longer remnants of factual evidence but rather become chimeric contrivances of the imagination.  Memory becomes the unintentional lie with which we fabricate our life story.  So what is our Truth? Can we know the truth of our life in memories and dreams?  Can we believe the dreams of a future unwritten and do the memories of an evolving past give us any indication as to the nature of our true self?  This cannot be who we are but rather who we wish to be, these stories assist us in constructing an illusion of self.  Who we are has nothing to do with our past, that is only who we were and can never be again, as the moment has already passed.  Who we are, is what is happening right now.  So who are you?  Are you the person you wish to be? If you must answer by telling the past or dreaming a future, then you have yet to become.  We are all in the act of becoming and who we are has to do with the choices we make.  Become the greatness that you seek and dream only when you sleep, as the present is passing and if left unattended shall become the story at your wake.  Ride the rising tide of your life and pay no attention to the deep waters of despair and dread.  Have the courage to stand, when asked to sit, speak when all are quiet, act as if your life depended on it, because the truth is, it does depend on it.  Every action lays the foundation of your self and it requires only action for you true story to be told.  Let the works of your life create the story that you seek and don’t give in to the resistance, because destiny is not for the weak.

Cultivate and Create the Dreams You Anticipate

Dream Goes On

Dream Goes On (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Welcome to the end, what has all the fuss been about? The end is not loud, just a silent truth in the back.  It looks the same as it always has, just a life and a dream.  A dream sometimes neglected in hopes of something better to be gained.  “The best come to those who wait” they say.   But a lifetime of wait, leaves only regret at the wake.  Welcome to the end of the World, there is no way out, just a silent empty room and a choice.   A choice we will all have to face.  A choice to hide eyes from indecency and inaction, or  take responsibility for the life we have manufactured.  It is time we open our eyes and acknowledge the truth, that we only have one chance, to do it right in this life.  Do something great and all your dreams may come true, but hide from yourself and all it has been is a ruse.  If it is the end of the world that you anticipate, then it is true, all good things do come to those who will wait.  But there is something much richer if you are willing to act, a dream manifested that has forever impact.  We all can make a difference upon the world if we choose but it requires some action, so don’t sit around and think but stand up and just do.  We cannot continue waiting around for the change we anticipate, but instead must become change and create something great.  Change your mind, change your life and subsequently you will change the world.  Out of the ashes of the old, the new world will arise.   It is a world that inspires others to rise and remove their disguise.   Test the boundaries of  belief and walk outside the lines of your cultural confines.  Deconstruct all the lies that have been given to you and manifest your own understanding of what it is you must do.  Stop with all the answers and start questioning everything, because the truth is, none of us really know anything. Let go of your silly assumptions about the nature of reality, embrace your ignorance and let go of the insanity.   While you ride on this rock around the light of a million nuclear explosions, take a moment to bask in the rays of pure astonishment.   Cultivate a new consciousness, free from lies and deceit, become the center of your Universe and take a moment to breathe.  You are the Truth and all things emerge from pure action and although it is important to reflect, the true beauty is in the act.  So get out and change the world everyday, this is the real truth of our existence, this is our playground so get out and play.

Marijuana: Freedom of the People and the Limits of Government

This week Washington and Colorado both voted on amendments to legalize the recreational use of Marijuana.  This marks a drastic shift in the political consciousness of this country involving the recreational use and decriminalization of drugs.  There are currently 18 states in addition to Washington D.C. that have laws which allow for the medical use of marijuana.  Both Washington and Colorado were among the 18 until Tuesday night, where now they both lead the pack in a revolution of a new political ideology within the United States.  This new ideology and political power has not only spoken but now stands head to head against the federal government in an attempt to show that “We the people” do not agree with the current federal legislation concerning marijuana.  Federal laws of course supersede the laws of the state allowing the Federal government to prosecute if they so choose, but if so decided they will simultaneously be going against the will of their people.  So herein lies the problem and the ball currently, rests quietly in the court of the federal government awaiting their reaction.   This of course is quite an interesting turn of events in the political discourse of the United States and the world  and  all of us are waiting on the edge of our seat to see what happens next.  For all of us, this new legislation poses a much larger question as global citizens, and the question is; to what extent should the government be allowed to impose laws governing the many activities of our daily lives?  Many of us would agree that government should play a direct and active role when it comes to the protection of its citizens, but in the arena of day to day activities which do not cause harm to others the government should be playing a much more passive role.   One that does not impose or impede, but rather improves the daily lives of its citizens and expands the freedoms of the people.

The passing of these laws should encourage us that we really can play a direct role in creating profound effects upon our governments, not only on a local level but on a national and international level as well.  Currently the entire world is interested in the passing of these laws and like us is watching to see what will happen next, because it means for all of us that there is a new wave of thinking which is growing.  A thinking amongst the people of the world that recognizes legality does not necessarily equate to morality.  The people have come to realize that governments and the laws they impose do not necessarily always represent the will of the people in real time.  We are beginning to see a sort of rebellion towards perceived authority the world over with events like the Arab spring, the mass occupy protests and now with the legalization of marijuana in these two states.  People everywhere are standing up for their beliefs against archaic governments which can no longer properly represent the people as a whole.  The information age has allowed the people to not only educate themselves but it has also allowed for self representation.  The proliferation of the individual voice has catapulted itself into the global consciousness, giving power to the people unlike any other time in history.  And what that voice seems to be saying is that we wish to be free to make our own choices concerning the mundane aspects of our lives as well as the more profound and intimate aspects of our lives without government intervention.  If we are meant to be truly free individuals, then we the people of the world should be allowed to decide when and how to regulate our individual consciousness with mind-altering and enhancing substances, whether that be with caffeine or cannabis, so as long as we do not harm anyone in the process.  This is what true freedom should consist of, the freedom to control and to make decisions concerning that which is most intimate for the individual.

This is not necessarily a question about drug use as it is a question of personal freedom and the limits of government in the lives of its citizens.  We are witnessing a change in belief about the nature of government and how it should be incorporated into our daily lives and I believe, we all have a stake in this change and should be actively participating in the shaping of our society and our reality.

Destruction, Self-Transformation and the Waves of Change

We live in a culture of violence, the children of each generation baptized by war, American dreams built upon the lost lives of cowardice and courage.  In the land of the free, milk and honey runs red with the blood of humans, not only Americans but humans.  How much tragedy at the hand of our triumphs must the world endure before we realize that this banality of barbarism is consuming us from within?   Our government by some estimates is currently projecting anywhere from 700 billion to 1.4 trillion dollars dedicated on defense this year.  We spend more per year on defense than the following thirteen countries that have the next largest defense budgets combined.

Global defense budgets, 2011

A chart published Tuesday by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation compares U.S. defense spending in 2011 with the combined spending of the 13 countries with the next largest defense budgets, using data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. (Peter G. Peterson Foundation / October 23, 2012)

Regrettably, we have become warmongers exercising diplomatic destruction to all those who oppose. Government corruption has and still continues to sell conflict to the country which is supposedly rooted in the fight for freedom.  Who’s freedom? Freedom for whom? Our freedoms continue to be incrementally stripped away while we impose our imperial freedom upon the world.  Is the path to freedom and peace achieved by the barrel of a gun?  Is it possible that the only path towards social progress and human advancement is through vice and violence?

Every facet of our society is being consumed by a culture of corruption.  Our government no longer represents a good natured will to help their people, corporations clamor for cash and leave ethics for ivory tower academic discussion and debate, the pursuits of our pharmaceutical and healthcare industries revolve around the creation of healthy wallets instead of healthy people.  It is a corruption of our principles and ethics which has led us towards a path of self-destruction.  In this culture of complacency it would seem that we have become merely individual socioeconomic batteries for the empowerment of empire?   It is our human responsibility to be more than just units of production perpetuating destruction and deception.  Each of us are responsible for the future of our world, and we cannot sit back and wait for our heroes to surface.  We are the heroes with which we wait so patiently for.

Change begins with each one of us redeveloping our perspective to encompass the hopes and dreams of all people, not just our own selfish pursuits.  It is up to each of us to choose whether to continue this culture of complacency or change our path from that of destruction to construction. It is our responsibility, to each other, to build businesses that are interested in providing a service for the community rather than merely making money for ourselves.  We must be interested in selling what we believe in and buying from companies that are concerned about the global community, not just their corporate profits.  We have to take the time to care about our government and make sure that the votes and money that we give them is allocated to programs which reflect our values.  If we dedicated as much time, money and energy to domestic issues as we have dedicated to the war machine, we might possibly live up to the title of “the land of the free.”   Change will come only when we the people decide to introduce it.  So, Create instead of Consume – Improve instead of Impede – Love instead of Hate – and stand up for something greater than yourself and change will come.

Gods, Morals & Money: The Crumbling Walls of a Dying Enlightenment

Lady Justice

Lady Justice (Photo credit: Scott*)

We have a moral responsibility to the rest of the world as a technologically advanced society to look inward and reflect upon the moral grounding of our culture and recognize how much of what we do, and who we are drives the future of our global society.  As a leading nation of the global community we must impress upon the world more than our defense contracts, endless wars, police state politics and the perpetuation of archaic “peasant to prince” wealth consolidation tactics.  It is morally reprehensible that we as the so called leaders of the free world and breeders of scientific discovery have our resources so narrowly focused on a path so destructive. While humans are facing famine, human trafficking, genocide, etc. we are currently spending according to some estimates over 100 billion dollars per year on Afghanistan alone. That roughly equates to 190,000 dollars per minute,  exceeding the average American annual income by almost 170,000 dollars and exceeding the global citizen’s average annual income by 183,000 dollars, in a single minute.  This of course is all under the guise of our protection from “evil terrorists.”  If our government is so preoccupied with our safety and well being that they see it fit to spend a million dollars every five minutes to continue such a campaign, why does it continue to allow mutagenic and carcinogenic food additives to be heavily placed in our food supply, or poisonous Chinese consumer goods to fill our department stores, and brain disorder causing fluoridated water systems to fill our empty cups.  Concealed handguns seem to be perfectly fine to sell to anyone over the age of eighteen, and alcohol consumption soon there after to better our judgements, but medical marijuana is a national threat which requires the dedication of federal agencies to raid and destroy state legal businesses.  The privatization of prisons across the country is a sign of the fruits of  a free market, meanwhile those institutions are more beginning to resemble that of forced labor camps for maximizing corporate profits, than they are reflecting institutions dedicated to the rehabilitation of a misguided citizenry.  We have become a violent schizophrenic, feeding off of our own mad ravings and ramblings about the fruits of modern capitalism and corporatism.  We have sold our morals for money and traded our heroes for gold, meanwhile hiding our eyes from the crumbling walls of our empire, once interested in the freedom of the individual and the enlightenment and empowerment of it’s people.

Much of the world’s greatest contemporary minds are currently focused upon our incoming Godhood as they have termed it, but my question is whether we have the moral chops to handle the responsibilities of Gods?  Are our intentions rooted in the well being and freedom of the people of the world, and if so what steps are we taking to ensure a safe and healthy society?  It would seem, on the contrary that we as a technologically advanced society on the cusp of so-called Godhood are more preoccupied with the imprisoning and killing of human beings, more than we are focused on the betterment of human existence.  The only betterment of human society I see in the intentions of our leaders, is that of the betterment of corporate profits and the filling of crony pockets.  A society once concerned with the enlightenment of it’s empire has sipped one too many times from the chalice of it’s own hubris.  Now drunk with greed and selfish endeavors it will soon be hung out to dry.  I remain hopeful that a hangover will ensue and the truth of our misguidings will become abundantly clear.  Only then can we rise from the rubble and reclaim our pursuits of truth, justice and freedom.
